PFA education funding: what players can claim towards a course

Updated 29 August 2026 · 6 min read

Most players leaving the game pay for retraining they did not need to pay for in full. If you have been a PFA member, funding support towards accredited courses is one of the most valuable and least used benefits attached to your career.

Who the PFA covers

PFA membership applies to players on full contracts at Premier League, FA WSL and EFL clubs; the union states that once you have joined, membership benefits are available for life. That is the part most released players miss — leaving the game does not automatically end your access to education support.

Eligibility rules, funding levels and the number of years you can claim after leaving the game are set by the PFA and change. Do not rely on what a teammate told you two seasons ago — check the current terms on the PFA's funding page or ask your regional PFA contact directly.

What kind of study is usually supported

  • Accredited academic courses — access courses, foundation and undergraduate degrees, postgraduate study.
  • Vocational and trade qualifications delivered by recognised providers.
  • Coaching and sports-industry qualifications, including badges and analysis courses.
  • Costs typically itemised on the application: registration, tuition, examination fees and books.

How to apply without wasting a term

  1. 01Pick the course and get the costs in writingThe application asks for the provider, the qualification level, start and finish dates, whether you are full or part time, and a breakdown of registration, tuition, exam and book costs. Get that from the provider before applying.
  2. 02Apply before you enrol, not afterFunding decisions and deadlines sit around the academic year. Applying after you have paid tuition is the most common way players lose out.
  3. 03Speak to the PFA's education teamThey deal with career transitions constantly and can tell you whether a course is likely to be supported before you commit to it.
  4. 04Stack it with other fundingPFA support is not the only route. Check the options below in the same week — they are not mutually exclusive.

Other funding worth checking in the same week

  • Student Finance England — tuition and maintenance loans for eligible higher-education courses, including many part-time routes.
  • Advanced Learner Loan — for eligible level 3 to level 6 further-education qualifications.
  • Free courses for jobs / adult skills funding — some level 3 qualifications are fully funded for adults who do not already hold one.
  • LFE (League Football Education) — support for players who came through the apprenticeship system.
  • County FA bursaries — periodically available towards coaching qualifications.

What we will not tell you

We do not publish specific grant amounts or promise you will be approved. Funding envelopes are set annually and awards are discretionary. Anyone quoting you a guaranteed figure for your situation is guessing.
