Media & Coaching

Staying close to the game, on different terms.

Coaching, analysis, scouting, academy roles, punditry, presenting and content. The knowledge you already have is genuine capital here — but the roles are competitive and often start part-time or unpaid, so plan the income side deliberately.

Cost

Coaching badges and safeguarding courses carry fees set by the governing body. Check current published prices rather than relying on figures you hear second-hand.

Duration

Entry-level qualifications can be completed in weeks; progression takes years.

Earnings

We don't publish earnings figures. Pay varies by role, region, employer and experience, and we won't estimate yours. Check current advertised salaries for any role before committing time or money.

Who it suits

  • You still love the game and want to stay in it
  • You're willing to start at grassroots or academy level
  • You can communicate clearly under pressure

Entry requirements

  • Coaching in the UK is governed by national coaching qualifications; check the current requirements with your national association (for England, The FA).
  • Analysis and media roles often value a portfolio and demonstrable output more than a qualification.
  • Safeguarding and first-aid certification is typically required for any role working with young players.

First actions

  1. 1Check your national association's current coaching pathway and the first badge you're eligible for.
  2. 2Volunteer or shadow one session at a local club to test whether you enjoy the other side of it.
  3. 3Produce one piece of analysis or content and share it publicly.

Questions people actually ask

Does being an ex-pro guarantee a coaching job?
No. It helps with credibility and access, but clubs still recruit on qualifications, safeguarding compliance and coaching ability.
Is media work realistic without a name?
It's harder, but portfolio-led routes into analysis, local radio and club media exist and are more accessible than national punditry.
