Mind & Identity

The part nobody trains you for.

Rebuilding structure, identity and purpose after the dressing room. This isn't a career pathway — it's the foundation the others stand on. Life After Football offers guidance, structure and signposting here. We do not provide therapy or clinical treatment.

Cost

Free within Life After Football. External clinical support may carry costs; NHS routes are free at point of use.

Duration

Ongoing.

Earnings

We don't publish earnings figures. Pay varies by role, region, employer and experience, and we won't estimate yours. Check current advertised salaries for any role before committing time or money.

Who it suits

  • The loss of routine is hitting harder than the loss of the job
  • You're not sure who you are outside of being a player
  • You want a plan before you make a big decision

Entry requirements

  • No requirements. Start where you are.
  • If you're struggling with your mental health, speak to your GP or a qualified professional — this pathway does not replace clinical support.

First actions

  1. 1Put three fixed anchors in your week — a training slot, a meal with someone, a set wake time.
  2. 2Write down what you actually enjoyed about football, separately from the status.
  3. 3Tell one person honestly how you're finding it.
